My WISE Project

2/6/10
Dear Reader,

My name is Phil Durnford I am in Mrs. Lords 12th grade WISE English class. The WISE class is Wise Individualized Senior Experience, this class gives you a chance to explore a project all on your own. Although first semester students attended regular English class now we only report in weekly the rest of the day we work on our WISE projects.

My WISE project is learning how to fly! I'm signing up for flying lessons and attending flight school. I know I want a career in aviation so I'm also going to look into different career choices in aviation. Today was the first meeting with my mentor Chris Fontana to discuss a game plane for my WISE project. For the WISE project we need a mentor, someone who helps us keep track of our progress and steers us when we get off track. I choose my tutor Chris Fontana to by my mentor as she has always supported my dream of flying. Because I meet with Chris every night after school for home work help we decided to devote the first 10 minutes every night to discuss my WISE project. After checking with my parents we agreed that I would sign up for flying lessons by the 10th of February. I'm planning to enroll in the East Hill Flying Club .

In September in 2009 I took whats called a Discovery Flight. this flight solidified my desire to be a pilot; I flew a Cessna 172 and loved it! This was the day I decided that starting the process to get my pilots license was to be my Wise Project.

The following is what I need to get a pilots certificate. I'm going to be taking one or two flying lessons a week for every hour I spend in the air. I anticipate spend two hours in flight school reading the text. The East Hill Flying club uses the Jeppesen Curriculum material. Jeppesen is a Boeing company and more info on them can be found at www.jeppesen.com. Before I even get into the plane I have to study lesson one. According to the East Hill Flying Club three written quizzes and three briefings are required before getting my certificate.

Here's my plan for the next two weeks. Tonight I am going to download the application form from the Flying Clubs website at www.lightlink.com. I'm also going to download and read through the Rule of Operation. Next I am going to contact the chief instructor to pay the fee, get enrolled, and attend orientation. The fee is one thousand thirteen dollars.

Two Week Plan

2/4/10 download application form and rules of operation
2/5/10 talked to my parents about scheduling orientation and how were going to pay the fee
2/6/10 – 2/10/10 Study Rules Of Operation
2/6/10 – 2/10/10 meet with East Hill Flying Club chief instructor
2/8/10 review Rules Of Operation with my mentor
2/11/10 review flight school syllabus with my mentor
2/12/10 begin studying ground school kit , at this point I need to figure out a study plan that works out for me.

I will report back when i have met with the chief instructor... until then Keep Your Nose Up
