Me and My Mentor

3/11/10 journal entry 18

I went to my mentor today and we looked at my blog and went over things that could help, like more pictures and maybe longer posts but other than that she really likes the work I have done lately. My mentor gave me the idea to do a blog in the first place and it's really paying off well. Also we went through a run down of my text book. My mentor thinks I should be trying to get further in the book so I can get up into the air as soon as possible; because that is the most important part and funnest part of this whole project. Finally, I just got my Red Flag paper form signed and ready to give to my teacher tomorrow. The last thing we did today was talk about talking to a fellow student at the East Hill Flying Club and see what their strategies were on getting the text done.

Last Red Flag

3/11/10
Today is the last Red Flag day and I am extremely excited about it. I could be at a lacrosse tailgate but instead I am here writing about my progress in the WISE program. to officially get out of my red flag class I must have my mentor/tutor sign a progress form to show Ms. Lord that I am a actually doing something. She also must look at my blog and make sure I am keeping up with my journal. On this form she must make comments good or bad and sign at the end.

Small Airports still flying

3/10/10 Journal 16

This Article was in Nation and World in the Ithaca Journal is about Ithaca's small airport still growing in the business. These past couple of years has been great for them, they're boarding numbers are the highest they have ever been in years. Even airports in Elmira and Syracuse have been booming. But even though these times now are good it doesn't look like the growth will continue for long. The prices all over the U.S have gone way accounting to gas prices for commercial jets. In the bigger airports prices are rising rapidly and there is no sign of slowing down. They have seen loses of 7 to 9 percent in numbers of passengers in the past two years so every time the prices are kicked up the demand keeps decreasing.

Research Article #1

3/10/10 Journal entry 15
I used this article for my bibliography for my wise class for information on the new technology behind flying

Title: POINT CLICK KILL

Authors: Hagerman, Eric

Source: Popular Science

This article is about taking unmanned air craft and replacing them with armed air craft. These are drones that are controlled in Indiana Springs Nevada and flown in Iraq and Afghanistan. These planes are making triple the amount of missions they did in the past and are a lot easier to train then, training a person to fly it. At first these planes were only used for spy planes (M-1 Predator) now they have the (M-9 Reaper) which is equipped with missiles. Unlike fighter jets these planes can stay in the air for 24 hours.

These planes are taking jobs from pilots who would original be doing there missions. Pilots are upset about this because one they don't think a drone can do what a person in the cockpit. Also the number of pilots that have started to learn how to fly these drone has double in the past couple years.

What i have learned so Far in the text

3/9/10
So far I have been reading about what you can get out of flying, career wise. I learned that the training it takes to become a commercial pilot takes many many hours of flight time and lots of knowledge test, to fly these huge planes. Also it went into the military side of flying of and found out in every branch of the military some sort of flying is needed. from Air Force to the Marines they use fighter jets, helicopters, and any type of machine that goes up in the air. So after reading that much i turned to different rules and regulations of flying like (VFR's) Visual Flight Rules, which is the restriction of staying in certain boundaries, and stay a certain distance away from the clouds. Another one is (IFR's) Instrument Flight Rules which allows you to fly to the ground or the horizon without any reference or regulations.

I am having a bit of a hard time understanding what all this information has to do with learning how to fly it just seems like I am just getting a bunch of information that isn't a %100 relevant to learning the mathematical side of flying or physical side. But as of now I have officially set up a system to study and blog and get all my other work done so now i am just plugging away at this stuff everyday and am waiting to get up in the air.
